A Light Inside by Danielle Villasana
Published in 2018 by FotoEvidence, A Light Inside chronicles the life-threatening challenges transgender women face in Lima, Peru, as well as the resilience and strength that defines this community. The book, written in Spanish with English translations, has been used as an educational tool and is dedicated to Tamara, who passed away shortly after her 30th birthday.

Community Collaboration / Colaboración con la comunidad
In partnership with Leyla Huerta of Féminas, Amnesty International, and the Peruvian Cayetano Heredia University, A Light Inside has been presented at and donated to universities, hospitals, and health care facilities, including Hospital Loayza, which inaugurated the country’s first—and to date only—consultation area for transgender women. The aim is to use A Light Inside as a tool to educate people about the dangers of systemic discrimination and transphobia.
ESP: En colaboración con Leyla Huerta del ONG Féminas, Amnistía Internacional y la Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia, A Light Inside ha sido presentado y distribuido gratuitamente en Lima, Perú, en universidades, hospitales y centros de salud, incluyendo el hospital Loayza en Lima que inauguró la primera—y hasta ahora la única—área de consulta para las mujeres trans en el país. El meta de A Light Inside es usarlo como una herramienta de educar a la gente sobre la discriminación y transfobia sistémica.

A Light Inside was edited by Régina Monfort and designed by Melike Taşçıoğlu. The book, which is written in Spanish with English translations, contains 116 pages, includes 70 color photographs and four essays. A personal introduction by Leyla Ariana Huerta, a prominent trans activist and founder of NGO Féminas, evokes the conflict that trans women face with their families and overall in a patriarchal society where “machismo” plays a damaging role in gender identity. An afterword by Ximena Salazar, an anthropologist at Peru’s Cayetano Heredia University, provides an insightful analysis of the social conditions that confront trans women in Peru.
